So many wonderful customer quilts on my longarm machine to sew. One I had this week is a smaller quilt, wall hanger size, and the cutting and piecing is way of free style without using a ruler. Since the hand dyeds are very vivid I decided to compliment this quilt by a kind like freestyle quilting with a variegated thread. Again Leah Day inspired my choices.

Ich habe so viele schöne Kundenquilts in meinem Service. Diese Woche arbeitete ich an einem kleineren Stück, ungefähr Wandbehangsgröße, in freier Schneidetechnik. Da die Stoffe im Fadenverlauf gefärbt waren und das ganze einen sehr künstlerischen Look hatte, hab ich auch das Quilting mit einem Multicolorgarn entsprechend darauf abgestimmt.

Pattern Choices for the modern Quilter

Lots of you let me know that my last post – colors for a more masculine quilt – made them curious about which pattern I’ll eventually choose.

And here it is! It should be something simple everybody, even a beginner, could sew (men: we are willing to spoil you with a quilt, but only up to a certain degree…). And it should look modern, straight and not too feminine. I came up with the ZigZag. What do you think? Would your sweetheart love it?

Einige kommentierten nach meinem letzten Post über die Farbwahl für einen eher maskulinen Quilt, dass sie neugierig sind, welches Muster ich dazu auswählen würde.

Hier ist es also- es sollte etwas sehr einfaches sein, was sogar eine Anfängerin nähen kann (Männer, wir verwöhnen Euch gerne mal mit einem Quilt, aber alles natürlich in Maßen…). Und es sollte modern, gradlinig, nicht unbedingt feminin aussehen. Ich hab mich für dieses Zickzackmuster entschieden. Was meinst du? Würde dieser Quilt deinem Herzbuben gefallen?

Hast du schon mal einen Zichzackquilt genäht? Wenn ja, dann poste doch einen Link in den Kommentaren, ich bin neugierig auf sämtliche Varianten…

How to buy happiness with just some dimes

I love flowers. I do.
And my son knows me loving flowers. He does.
We have a field of flowers nearby where you can cut garden flowers yourself and pay by simply throwing a few bucks in a small box. My nine year old spent his pocket money to get me this wonderful summer flower bouquet on his way back from school. How cute is that! (Have you ever heard about a boy spending all his pocket money for flowers?)
Seeing the bouquet makes the sun shining not only on my desktop, you know it’s more than this.



My favorite one is this yellow pompon dahlia with the red spots. We called her nosebleed dahlia (actually it sounds way of irreverent, but this day my son got nosebleeds and so it had to be).


Last weekend was quite busy and I had not that much time for sewing. There was a small exhibition of all kind of craft businesses here and a friend of mine owns a fine art carpentry so he asked me to join his booth to compliment his furniture with my textiles. The shelves are what he made to display my quilts. Cool, hugh?

Ich liebe Blumen, wirklich. Und mein Sohn weiß das.
Ein paar Straßen weiter gibt es ein Blumenfeld, bei dem man selbst pflücken kann, man kann den Durchmesser der Stengel vom Strauß in einem Lochbrett messen und dann den entsprechenden Betrag in ein Kässchen werfen.
Den tollen Sommerblumenstrauß hat mir mein Neunjähriger auf dem Heimweg von der Schule mitgebracht. Ich war ganz geplättet (welcher Junge gibt schon sein Taschengeld für Blumen aus?). Er ist halt ein Herzwärmer!
Die gelbe Pompondahlie mit den roten Sprenkeln ist meine Lieblingsblüte, wir haben sie Nasenblutendahlie genannt. Das mag vielleicht etwas pietätlos klingen, aber Ben hatte an diesem Tag Nasenbluten, und da drängte sich die Assoziation irgendwie auf…
Letzte Woche stand ich drei Tage lang auf einer Gewerbeausstellung. Ein Freund von mir hat eine Möbeltischlerei für wirklich tolle Einzelanfertigungen und er hat mich eingeladen, mit Wohntextilien seine Möbel auf dem Stand zu begleiten. Die Quilts haben sogar extra Regale von ihm bekommen.

Bei meinem “maskulinen” Farbschema von letzter Woche gab es einige, die mir geschrieben haben: Ich bin gespannt, was für ein Muster daraus wird. Das Muster gibt es nächste Woche, doch heute erst mal eine passende Stoffauswahl, von denen mir der rechts in der dritten Reihe (Nr.6) mit seinen attraktiven Punkten besonders gut gefällt.

This one I got at my longarm quilting service. We agreed to choose a very contemporary and also geometric quilting design. It’s simple but fits perfectly to the patchwork!

Color choices for the modern quilter

Subtitle: Color choices for a modern quilter’s man

Sewing quilts was ever a women's domain. They sew for themselves or for others to give away. Men are also considered as a recipient from time to time, perhaps not often, because men typically are not what one calls "hot on a quilt given to". Many men have a prejudice: this flowery craftwork doesn’t feel right for me! One more reason to give evidence that quilts can be very right for a man, something he cherishes and wants to use.

And color - color plays a key role in this thing.

The below photo, dominated by earth tones, in contrast a very dark almost black blue, yellow, shades of green and a soft shade of sand - I do think that this color scheme is pleasing to men.

Next Tuesday I will present the fabrics matching these colors and the following week my blog will show a masculine modern quilt pattern.

What "masculine colors" do you use in your quilts? Have you ever sewed a quilt for the taste of a man and given to him? What was the reaction of the male recipient? And what sort of man reads my/a quilt blog and lets us gain new insights;-)?

Quilts zu nähen ist seit langer Zeit eine Frauendomäne. Frauen nähen Sie für sich selbst, oder für andere zum Verschenken. Männer werden auch ab und zu bedacht, vielleicht nicht allzu oft, denn die Männer sind jetzt nicht das, was man „heiß auf einen Quilt geschenkt zu bekommen“ nennt. Viele haben das Vorurteil: diese Blümchenhandarbeit ist doch nichts für mich! Ein Grund mehr zu zeigen, dass Quilts genau das Richtige für Männer sein können, etwas, was sie toll finden und gerne nutzen.

Und Farbe – Farbe spielt da eine Schlüsselrolle.

Dieses Foto war meine Inspriation: dominiert von lehmfarbenen Tönen, einem sehr dunklen Kontrast in beinah schwarzem Blau, Gelb, das Schattierungen von Grün annimmt und weichem Sand – ich denke schon, dass diese Farbwelt angenehm für Männer ist.

Nächsten Dienstag werde ich die Stoffe in diesen Farben vorstellen und die Woche darauf dann ein modernes Quiltmuster.

Welche “Männerfarben” benutzt ihr in Euren Quilts? Habt ihr überhaupt schon mal einen Quilt nach dem Geschmack eines Mannes genäht und verschenkt? Was war die Reaktion des männlichen Empfängers? Und welcher Mann liest (m)einen Quiltblog und lässt uns neue  Erkenntnisse gewinnen ;-)?
