Color formula 2

Donnerstag, 22. Februar 2007

I often like to use an impressing picture for example of a landscape
and take the most important colors as a guide for my quilt design. Here I could use a very popular color scheme from darkest blue to white
which colors my design like this

I think it's not too bad, but the colors are very pure. May be a good effect (think of Japanese indigo quilts), but could be also a little bit boring. So my second try will be to look for more nuances. In the picture I saw greens and browns too.

This wider range looks livelier.

Well, I like this one better, but best I like to add a very little pinch of exotic spice, means a contrasting color like a warm red in these cool blues.

That will do.

Color formula 1

Choosing and combining colors is for me like cooking. One has to find the right measurement of ingredients and to add a few yummy specials. And the most important is how it is spiced:

Oh, too dull, seems insipid and needs definitely more salt and pepper, perhaps a little bit chilli

But this one has got too much sweetener. Bah, such a toothache ...

For me nature is a perfect guide to find colors with brilliance which aren't garish at all. Just look at a picture of landscape or a flower like this marigold.

This seems to be the right luminosity to me

I found this wonderful example for my "color formula":

Isn't it a beauty? Simply using scraps in easy pieced blocks, but wonderful contrasting colors.
(I found it as an advertisement of a German manufacturer for quilting equipment)

A surprisingly Japanese wedding ring

Montag, 19. Februar 2007

That’s why I love the Japanese magazines: I get to see Quilts, which show a traditional block such as wedding ring in a completely different way.

On Rosenmontag in Germany a lot of people like to have fun with dress up as another person (perhaps a little bit like American people do on Halloween ). Voilá - here are "Pipi Langstrumpf" (hasn't she got nice pigtails) and her little son "Zorro"

This is one of my first projects (May 2004), a simple doubleninepatch I sewed from Fassett fabrics (stripes and flowers). It's bed size.

Surfing through the net by following my curiosity about what other quilting women are working on I more and more hit some blogs - so interesting. First I only read, couldn't to let all the inspiring pics and ideas out of my sight, later I wondered if it would be a good idea to get in contact to those "blog-people" and to share my pics and sewing also.

When I was a child, my grandma sewed a lot of clothes for the family. I always set down next to her old PFAFF and felt so comfortably. She once told me: When you are tall enough to get your feet down to the pedal, I'll teach you sewing too. Maybe this was one of the best things anyone could give to me. So I started sewing in the age of six and I hope I mustn't end bevor I'll die :-).

There are a lot of projects (or will they end as an UFO???) I'm working on. I best like the Fassett-Collection, his art of juggling with colors and patterns - so in 2003 I could not longer keep me back to start my own little online shop with Fassett-fabrics (and this means I can take pieces of his fabrics at any time right here in my house - what a feeling) .

But meanwhile I also got to know and to love the fine Japanese Quilting (always riffling through magazines like Quilts Japan or Tshushin).

As I'm a new Blogger not so familiar with how this is to handle (and also constantly searching in my dictionary for the right words :-) ) I have it for today.
