Frühlingserwachen Bloghop 

einlud, hab ich gerne zugesagt. Hab ich doch immer sehr viel Spaß mit meinen Quiltfreundinnen von den Modern Cologne Quilters.

Ein bisschen hin- und herüberlegt hab ich schon, was mir denn zum Frühlingserwachen so einfällt, und dann fiel es mir wie Schuppen aus den Haaren: Mensch, was könnte mehr frisch und zart sein, als die bunten Low Volumes, die da grade frühlingsfrisch in meinem Regal stehen: Modern Backgrounds Colorbox!

When I got the invitation from Judith to be part of her Spring blog hop I happily said YES, OF COURSE (you know I love my quilt buddies from the Modern Cologne Quilters)!
I was pondering what to talk about as my Spring subject, when it hit me: what could be more representing Spring than a fresh and light colorful low volume collection? Freshly from my shelves: Modern Backgrounds Colorbox!

Mein Projekt, eine kleine 60 cm x 60 cm große Tischdecke, braucht 3 Ingredienzien und ist im Nu gemacht:
1 Charmpack COLORBOX
1 Charmpack weißer Uni (oder einfach 70 cm weiße Meterware, aufgeteilt in 36 Quadrate 5" x 5")
1 Cupcake Mix Recipe No 1 (das ist ein Produkt entwickelt von Carrie Nelson für Moda, ein Block von Papieren, genau abgestimmt auf Charmpacks, mit denen das exakte Nähen schnell und einfach gelingt).

My project, a 24" x 24" small table topper, needs just 3 ingredients and is made in the blink of an eye:
1 Charmpack COLORBOX
1 Charmpack white solid (or 3/4 yard of a white solid, cut in thirty-six 5" x5" squares)
1 Cupcake Mix Recipe No 1 (a product developed by Carrie Nelson for Moda, perfect for the use of Charmsquares making sewing accurately quick and fun).

Im Grunde näht man jeweils 1 Druckstoff und einen einfarbigen Stoff nach den Anweisungen auf dem Papierblock und schneidet sie dann in große und kleine Dreiecksblöcke, die man beliebig zusammensetzen kann. Das hat mir irre Spaß gemacht und hat auch nur einen Nachmittag gedauert, präzise Ergebnisse sind garantiert.

What you basically do is to piece a print and a solid with the foundation paper, cut them in smaller and larger half-square-triangles and set them together in a layout you like. It's tons of fun, took me only one afternoon and precise results are guaranteed.

Inspiring Projects using Comma from Zen Chic for Moda

A couple of weeks ago my current line Comma was shipped out to stores and get a warm welcome among the quilters. We here at farbstoff in Germany actually sell the fabrics like crazy and run already out of some bolts (Nigella Multi was the hit).

Seeing what other people are inspired to sew with is in fact one of the best parts of my doing and makes my heart sing.

I’d like to showcase some projects to inspire you too!

This is a supercute quilt using the Moda Candy size of 2 1/2” squares, made by sewsisters. I want one!!!

speaking of circles: this one is called “ring around” by Melissa Corry and it’s meant for a little baby.

She even made a cover for a baby car seat from Comma and gives you a tutorial for it.

Another candy charm pack and circle them lead to a table runner on the blog Ifianllyhavetime . Look at these mini hexagons on the borders.

This one from sewpixie at flickr is cool, huh? I like the 74, numbers are always such an eyecather.

My friend Debbie Grifka from Esch House Quilts loves minimalism too and created a new pattern for purchase:

And look at this beauty from Sherry of hiddentreasurecrafts! She just used up some leftoverstrips. I have a thousand of these, why didn’t I came up with that idea???

She made also a black and white variation of “Play a card”, all three quilts from only one Fatquarterbundle (even a fateightbundle would have done)

Do you love bold Hexagonquilts? There is even a detailed pictured sewing instruction for this one from Sara at modabakeshop!

I personally couldn’t resist to this stunning star quilt! That contrast between the white and the prints makes it gorgeous! It’s a challenge entry from Bungalow Bay Quilts. Thumbs up!

And these cute blocks from Kathy are still going to become a fresh modern quilt, I can already imagine the look!

Some projects use only a part of the Comma color spectrum, for example the black-gray-white with a single color. Yellow makes a good partner here in the twister table runner made by Quilt Barn.

  
Or look at that impressive version from emmalinebags. She used only slate and yellow with a hint of chalk in her warm HST quilt. LOVE it!

Are you inspired? I can’t wait to get to my sewing machine for a couple of hours and try out what my eyes caught.

Pattern choices for the modern quilter

Last week I showed my fabric selection for the azure-blue/lacquer red color choice here in the blog and this is the quilt I've designed of these materials: A picturesque background of shades of blue with accents of black, yellow, terracotta and a very eye-catching bright red.

I thought a plus quilt pattern might look good for these colors. What do you think about the red crosses?

Letzte Woche habe ich für die Farbauswahl “azurblau-lackrot” eine Stoffzusammenstellung von modernen Stoffen im Blog vorgestellt, und dies ist der Quilt, den ich aus diesen Stoffen zusammengestellt habe: Ein malerisches Ineinanderfließen von Blautönen mit den Akzenten von Schwarz, gelb, terracotta und als Hingucker ganz leuchtendes Rot.

Ich dachte ein Plus-pattern würde gut zu diesen Farben passen. Was denkt ihr über die „roten Kreuze“ :-) ?

Pencil case

It is very nice as a pencil case, but not only - this versatile case which is made from a few scraps in an afternoon makes an ideal gift (especially if it is personalized with some words), and also protects your sunglasses, your sewing notions, your jewelry on trips, your make-up. You get the idea.

Es eignet sich sehr hübsch für Stifte, sozusagen als Federmäppchen, aber nicht nur - dieses vielseitige Etui, das aus ein paar Stoffresten an einem Nachmittag genäht ist und auch ein ideales Geschenk abgibt, schützt genauso die Sonnenbrille, die Nähutensilien, den Schmuck auf Reisen, die Schminkutensilien. Falling in love with Lucy

Some women of my age are very excited to tell about their first grand children (well, those are the very early ones). And of course, the first grandchild will be wrapped in a beautiful quilt. I've become also a grandma. A "cat granny" - because my daughter has recently got a little cat - sweet, pretty, smart - with whom she has visited me at the weekend. It happened to me too, I'm also that "oh let me sew something wonderful for this sweet being" victim. Is it really true or is it just me thinking that cats love the quilts and snuggle in it with preference? Even during the sewing process, as only two! rows (10 cm) were laid out on the floor for composing the set, Lucy has placed herself exactly on this little piece, even getting her tail fitting on those four inches, and looking upon us in a matter saying "mine” . Manche Frauen in meinem Alter erzählen schon ganz begeistert von ihren ersten Enkelkindern (na gut, die ganz früh dran waren). Und natürlich werden die ersten Enkel in froher Erwartung mit einem hübschen Quilt empfangen.
Ich bin auch Oma geworden. Eine „Katzenoma“ – denn meine Tochter hat seit einigen Wochen eine kleine Katze - süß, hübsch, smart – mit der sie mich am Wochenende besucht hat. Es ist mir auch passiert, ich bin auch diesem „ich näh was schönes für dieses süße Wesen Virus“ zum Opfer gefallen. Bilde ich es mir nur ein, oder stimmt es tatsächlich, dass Katzen die Quilts lieben und sich mit Vorliebe darauf kuscheln? Schon im Entstehungsprozess, als nur zwei ! Reihen (10 cm breit) auf dem Fußboden zum Zusammensetzten des Sets auslagen, hat sich Lucy millimetergenau auf diese Reihen draufplatziert, den Schwanz noch so um sich geschlängelt, dass er auch noch auf die zehn Zentimeter passte und uns angesehen als wollte sie sagen „meins“.

Batik Beauty

Several weeks ago I launched a kind of contest on my customer's community blog. They sent me a photo of their tops and the winner (choosen by polling) got a free quilting service from me.

So here is the winner quilt, freshly finished and taken from my machine.

Da ist er - der Gewinnerquilt, gerade fertig geworden und frisch abgenommen von meiner Longarmmaschine.

Pure white

Strolling through the Patchwork Magazine I often thought by myself "MG, why do those pictures not compliment the quilts in a better way?" But this time, when I opened the new issue I was sooo exited. If I ever could have determined how my new modell should be presented I couldn't have made it any better. The interior style is so perfectly fitting - I'm really glad with this presentation! Just click at the picture and have a closer look.

This very pastel quilt is made from printed scraps alternating with wide white strips to show the quilting lines. Branches of leaves are swinging like waves around the prints, the thread variegates from pale white over yellow to lavender.
Those quilts are for selling and can be personalized in color and style. Just imagine a cute little girl cuddling in this pastel dream for a nap.

two new modells

Boy, I was really bussy those days. Two new modells finished for the Patchworkmagzine ;-) (and along the way developing and publishing a very sophisticated second BOM and a "Storm at sea-Quilt")

Puh - give me a break, just let it be christmasdays or whatever to sit down, relax and have a cup of tea. Ok, my painfully groan isn't meant seriously - you know I love to do creative things and to play around with fabrics. I will never get tired of.

So let me show you my projects.

First is a babyquilt to give as a gift for your beloved crawling nieces or nephews.

A couple of month ago I posted a color exercise using "hidden spools" as blocks.
Now you can see a realisation of this exercise.

My daughter left her hometown to go for studies to Kiel and I told her that in US kids leaving for college usually get a quilt for their new next life step. So she enthusiastically wondered: "Does that mean you will sew me a quilt for my own?"

And yes, exactly my dear, you are absolutely right.
This is the quilt I made for her.
